I have a question for those of you using plants, i.e. pothos, in your sumps. How do you do it? I was thinking of a mesh pot with just regular gravel as a substrate. I tried once with eggcrate with the roots through it into the sump, but they died.

i noticed uv mentioned alot in this thread and algae so first i will say that i rarely clean my glass and i only have a large pleco to clean it.

as for UVs uv is ultraviolet. its an area of light. to qualify as uv it has to produce said light and so if its labled uv it must be producing the required light. cheap bulbs imo would do this just as well as expensive bulbs ( with little variation but not enough to warrant high prices ) however the "build quality" of the lamps might be worth paying more for which would extend the lifespan of the effective output of the lamps ( thats not just when they are lit but when they are useful ) .

i guess the only way to prove anything is to put a cheap £5 uv light next to a £500 uv and run the same water though them and measure the results. over a period that includes the active lifetime of the lamps, i doubt there would be a massive difference though.

the uv on my pond is off atm as its winter and low light. it wont go on untill the days get longer and the water starts looking green and i dont have uv on my tanks although i do have a canister filter with a uv hiding in a cupboard somewhere its unused (and un-found too ... i must find that now i remember about it :D )

to add fuel to the filtration fire. i think there were three mentioned. plant filtration, sump and something else. well i use ( as well as many others ) canisters and i know that aquaman who is well known here uses and type of ugf where water is driven through the substrate powered by air only. ( the substrate is however piled up rather than on the bottom which suits the rays very well ).
i think this is great method myself and have used variations in the past before i was aware of aquamans version but it shows that there are many different ways to filter tanks.

i hope there is some helpful information in there somehwere lol :D

happy ray keeping :)

I do beleive in the term you get what you pay for. but 2000$ on a UVS is just wrong. dont spend that. you can get a great quality UVS for very much under 1000$. and i mean you should get something pretty decent for 600-800.

I too am curious where the heck $2K came from. I'm guessing this all stemmed from a UV discussion. I stated you get what you pay for. Referring to Wlim UVs. The price I mentioned was $900. I have discussed these UVs with a guy that works with them and am sold on thier products and the people using them have very happy very productive rays. I think some of the nicest CB rays over here are being produced in systems with these lights. I'm sold on the dedication of the company and believe that they take care of thier customers. I thought thier most expensive UV was $1200 which is spot on for other 240 watt units.......

I'm sold on the idea of using multiple lights in one chamber rather then simply repeating the same thing over and over with multiple bulbs. I tried pointing this out as there is a measurable "kill rate" associated with UVs and its obvious that multiple bulbs in one case has a significantly higher kill rate then "daisy chaining" smaller bulbs. There are people out there with programs that analyze UV kill rates. To say they're all the same is rubbish, just like saying rolls royces and ford escorts are built the same. I called T1 on kill rate of the UVs he's saying are good enough only to suggest how would you know if they're good enough, and he PM'd me his phone number...... :) Now mag floats as algae scrubbers?????

I think if you used a tank say 180 gallons and ran algae scrubbers every 6" then I'd think you could have more then enough algae to keep up with a decent sized group of rays. You could have the same area as a 60x60 in half of that tank.....

You got me thinking on that db. You wouldn't even need that much space. Say 4'x2'x2'. Doesn't need thick acrylic as the water will be going pretty much straight back in the tank by gravity and it can sit right on top of the tank itself. Powered by a pump in the sump or 3 power heads in the tank and bam you have 3 20"x20" scrubbers.

They need cleaned every week but cleaning one at a time and always having 2 others going is nice and only take 5 min. Or clean them all at the same time

Don't like it after 8 months as it takes time to get the good algae then easy enough to take down.

I'm going to start drawing up plans tonight! Worth a shot!

The linking up method works just great I zaps then keeps zapping depending on the amount of units you
Have

The hose tails are also clear blue which lights up the hoses connected

I have over 5ft of contact time the way mines set up you wouldn't get that from one unit if you did have a 5ft single unit where would you put that super long unit let along the 11ft space you would need to change the tube

Even the very high pice units use the in out system just they have compacted it down

Come on DB you have talked to the guy who sell the $1200 units and he has said they are great and given you the hard sell of course he will HES a sales man of course he will big up his product

I have made the same thing that does the same job for a 1/3 of the price

Look at it another way if off the shelf and most expensive was the best why don't we all have top of the range purpose made sumps that cost $3000 made by a top brand
I tell you why we all get sumps made by tank makes which do the same job as a $3000 but for $150 does this mean you get what you pay for and our sumps are crap or does it mean we done the smart thing and saved $2850 on buying cheap and have that extra money to by a pair of bd

I hope all you guys saying you get what you pay for have $3000 sumps with gold plated pipes because you do get what you pay for right yes it may look nice but who cares its under my tank and I NEVER see it

You guys are all to fast to tell me mine doesn't work as well as a $1200-2000 unit without even owning the high priced unit you can big something up when you have been using this high priced unit until then you have no proof of your own just the word of a sales man or how good it looks on paper
I have the proof in running mine and that's all I need come back in 20 years when you have been running your high price units

I've always ran a huge 50 gallon Rubbermaid sump with several 6 gallon salt bucket bio towers filled with bio balls ( in several coarse bags) with great results . I would like to upgrade to the k2 media when I upgrade the tank
