Outdoor Pond heating solution? ( 5700 Gallons )

10-12kw?! holy moneybags batman! multiply that by 17c per kwh and you're talking 40-50$ a day/ 1200-1500$ a month in electricity costs.

Look into the threads of the huge indoor tanks for tropical fish. Many of them use their water heaters (providing they have no invertebrates) instead. But seriously at those electricity costs it'd be cheaper to build and heat a building around your pond.

Without a cover or a glass enclosure around the pond, it is going to be expensive to heat it to 80 degrees. DIY solar would be the cheapest, but also the ugliest. You could also try a pool heater, hot tub heater, etc., but they all consume a lot of electricity. I'm surprised that your water temperature stays in the 60s all summer. Does your pond not get any sunshine?

Yeah my pond is surrounded by trees, only gets a couple of hours of sunlight per day. I think on days with heatwaves the pond gets up to 70

most of the hard core koi guys will build a little plastic greenhouse over their pond in the winter and run a 2-5kw heater and keep the water in the low 40's and let the fish hibernate. thats probably your best bet and the same size heater would bring water temps up to the 70s in the summer and not kill your electric bill.

Agree a small heater to keep your pond at 40 seems more reasonable than bringing tropical fish outside.
Because my ponds are shallow and I live in WI (very similar to your winters) they freeze solid, I simply bring the fish in for the winter. A couple rubbermaid tubs in the basement would also be a more realistic solution.

I would love to see it though. :D. Where is the hot spring when you need it free heating.
