hey keepers,

As of now i have a 55g with an ornate bichir in it. and i was thinking of doing some african cichlids, can they be together in one tank? or do you feel they cichlids will be too aggressive?

thanks in advance

By african you mean from malawi or tan***ika? It really depends..sooner or later you will need to upgrade your tank because bichir will outgrow current tank... Then i wouldnt put malawi cichlid near that monster because it can happen he will eat them by night.. Its 50cm+ (20"+) against 15cm (6") :)

Well with group of adult frontosa fishes it could work..but you would need 180g tank atleast

Can be done while the bichir is still a juvi and you dont have any super aggressive cichlids. An auratus or chipokea might kill it.

My tank is a little out of the ordinary. But I have a Senegal, and Delhezi Bichir, a bit smaller than yours. There tank mates are a EBJD, Orange Jewel, Dep Water Hap, Honduran Red Point, and a Rusty Cichlid. Three years, no problems at all. I also have a couple of Roseline Sharks, and a couple of Rosey Barbs. My Bichirs could eat them if they wanted to, but my fish all get along really well. The only aggression in the tank, is posturing between my Rusty, and Honduran. The Bichirs get along especially well with my EBJD, and my Orange Jewel is in love with the Senegal, thanks to him see colors up all the time.

you also have to make sure that the cichlids you put in don't out compete the ornate for food, because if that happens everything goes down hill lol. He will get hungry and start to eat the cichlids. Also as stated above he'll need an upgrade sooner or later. As well as make sure the cichlids don't have aggression towards the ornate.
