Just thought I would share my new jewel pick up
Picked up a wild caught red jewel yesterday, extremely good colors today considering he darkened a lot when I introduced him. Not really sure what species it has some nice yellow on its chest but the rest is bright red.

The reason why I share it here is the lady at the store (its an independant business) shared with me her method for sexing jewels, she said that the males always tend to have more small spots on them, and the females tend to have a less consistent cover of spots, but they are larger and brighter.
so just thought I would share and see if anyone else has found this method to be reliable

just the one fish, They were expensive and I wasnt sure if I was getting a male or a female so I didn't want to risk having to males fighting eachother. I'll pick up some more in the future hopefully but the fish is very beautiful. worth every penny. the Red rivals marine colors

so I checked on my neighbor's tank today that I donated some Jewel and Convict fingerlings to since he lost half his fish and as I took out the breeding pair last week, I had to remove a 2nd breeding pair today. All I had open was a 30g Long the other 1.5"-2" pair was in so I put a divider in it and gave the new pair the other half of the tank w/ some rocks and called it a wrap :) I'll probably use one pair to breed feederfish and the other to breed for selling purposes. I gave him 5 more little 3/4'' fry , and 3 more male pink Convicts at 1.5" and said "Now we get to do this all over again". He laughed.

More pix when the site is fixed

Found a clutch of eggs from the new pair stuck to one of their rocks (I added a dozen or so since the last pic) early this morning and they were white and I figured they screwed up again but the male was very actively guarding them and very attentive and by this afternoon they turned opaque. I guess he fertilized them while I was working in the fishroom and not paying attention to him :D

I've been meaning to update pics for all my tanks but I keep forgetting to charge the battery for my camera so i'll do that soon and post pics of the fry w/ their Mum and Pop

I moved the 2nd pair about 3 weeks ago, FTR

Here for a bit of advice on these cichlids. I recently got a pair of them for free. And I noticed that one of them has a large belly. I'm not sure if its bloat or what... Can someone spread a little insight on this? I did notice that the one that looks fine is brighter then the one that has a swollen or larger belly.

Yeah from time to time. I currently have the one in a QT tank and treating it.. Still hasn't got any better yet.
