What'll happen? I like the look of it but plan on using it in a non-salt water tank for some electric yellows cichlids in a 55 gallon (approx. 4 feet by 1 foot). Does anyone happen to know what type of rock live rock is? I'm thinking black background, white sand and live rock formations for a faux salt water set up. I want to go hard and get a monster fish but not now. ANY feedback, constructive criticism and advice is always appreciated.

Live rock is made of old corals, or base rock thrown in the Ocean that is colonized by micro organism. Personally I would use base rock , if rock was made from dead corals etc. It will effect the ph by making it higher.

Btw if you placed established live rock in a freshwater aquarium all the organism's and any creature's on it will die and effect water quality in some way or another.

The water (H2O) will accept carbonates (CO3^2-) from the I'm assuming mostly calcium carbonate based base rock to produce (H3O+) molecules in the aquarium solution and increase acidity? I don't want to turn the tank into a can of 7 up so I'll dry them out maybe boil the rocks and use them sparingly. Any other ideas or suggestions?

Got anything that'll counteract the pH spike? I'm taking a chemistry course for the second time. I'll take it slowly and record water parameters as they change. Thanks for the reply.

Can anyone identify the type of rock most commonly used as live rock? Any geology majors?

Definitely go with base/dry rock. I've bought from reefcleaners before and loved it.
But, its pretty rough stuff and can easily cut you, so keep that in mind if you go with a rock loving fish.

l'll take that into consideration, might sand the rough edges. Has anyone put rocks from a salt water environment into a freshwater tank and have any of the algae and/or other organisms on it live? Just curious...
