My Amapa didn't turn black till around 10-12".... My VZ and Amapas looked the same as juvies......

Reason it was black could have been mood - Never did try keeping it alone.

My aimara has been pitch black since I got it at 13", now approaching 16-17" and still black as ever. Always in a pissed off mood. I never got a confirmation as to which catch point it was. Perhaps it's an amapa?

I would say so. We need JL to explain lol, he has both in dark tanks, his Venezuelan are dark but his amapa next to it shows the difference, on his Venezuelan you can still see slight difference in color where the bars are where as amapa looks pitch black.

That is interesting. I never knew of this. Wonder why that is..

VZ gets dark but doesnt really get pitch black like a Amapa from what i noticed.
friend has a Amapa and its black black where as my VZs can turn black but not
as dark or black through out the whole body.

From November 2016 your aimara has only gotten to 14in? What size was he when you got him?

Mine is 15in and has grown 11in in the 15 months I’ve had him (since March 2017).

He was in a 2 footer tank all the time, only intro him into main tank(containing huge bichir) a few months ago.
