Being accustomed to thuds suck

Sorry for your loss My del goes nuts whenever any of the fish spook it and rams into the aquarium. One day it slammed itself into the side of the glass so hard I thought his spine was damaged.

My lap does this. I hate it cause he scares the big endli and odoe and they start acting up a little too but then they realize nothings wrong and stop while he continues going crazy swimming up and down hitting the lid and splashing everything around the tank. I fear he will knock his self out some day. And he does it from the slightest thing I can drop something and it'll send him flying or it may not. He's bipolar.

Sorry for your loss. Sometimes when a poly is about to go or experiencing unknown issues. I've also discovered that they will struggle swimming around and bang against the top lid.

He was fine yesterday before and after wc. I sat there and watched them for about a hour after the wc like normal and everyone was fine. Only fish I was worried about was my lap cause as you read above he's crazy. The del wasn't an easily spooked fish I could pet it gently during wc or when it would come to the top to feed if I wanted.

Awe man that sucks.. Out of curiosity, is the room completely dark at night? I actually keep night-lights at outlets near all my tanks to reduce the chances of freak-outs.

Only light they get is moonlight through the shades at night. I doubt this is the case as polys and most of my fish for that matter are nocturnal IIRC.

On another note I've been toying with the idea of rehoming all of my polys. Maybe it's time.

I know my bichir thud sometimes, usually it is them running to the surface to gulp a breath. I would say if you didn't have a decent amount of space between water and lid he may have suffocated.

Ik that. I fill up to the black part so that leaves about an inch of space, my 16-18" endli has no problem breaching for air I'm sure a 9" endli wouldn't. They go to the top slowly and calmly as well. I've never lost a bichir, to jumping or suffocating or any of the rookie mistakes, I've done my research years ago when I first got into them. Idk what could've spooked him. I was thinking possibly my dog cause that tank is low but I always felt they were more comfortable with him than me lol. Idk what it was. I don't recall dropping anything last night.

Fish are not the typical pet, I find them to be much more difficult to keep than my tarantulas for the simple fact that you have to clean the air they breath (the actual water). Routine can go a long way to keeping healthy fish, but outside of that fish can still stress and die at the drop of a hat. I find bichirs to be all but bulletproof (the hardiest of all the fish I have ever kept). Perhaps the fish you had was injured, perhaps it was sick. My guess is yours just stressed to death. Fish mental health is some of the trickiest stuff, usually there isnt anything I can do to keep a fish alive that goes down the stress rabbit hole. The best I can do is turn the lights off and let them decompress.

This isn't why I'm considering it. I've been thinking about it due to life getting ready to hit me, I may not have enough time as I do now. I'm going to be in college soon in a little under a year, I might be going away. So wc might not be as frequent, every two weeks possibly. I was gonna keep 5 fish between the two tanks I'd have two in the smaller one (jag cat and purple wolf) and 3 in the larger one (curu, odoe, and gold wolf). Wolffish are my favorite. My curupira is my pride and joy lol. So basically reducing bioload to something more manageable and that ik I can get away with. I've even toyed with the thought of the purple wolf and odoe going as they're pretty easy to acquire where as the gold wolf, curu, and jag cat I can't get in my area. The gold only from Wes or ray, and a curu from them two or aquascape which can be over priced, and the jag cat aquascape or rapps. And the bichirs I've gotten all in my area except the ornate which I got from aquascape almost two years ago. It makes sense. I mainly just can't part with the curu a but cause of attachment and gold because I've been looking for this fish for a while and I finally got it and enjoy it. I love my odoe as well so I don't wanna get rid of her but if I had to it'd be easier than the curu. The jag cat I enjoy very much as well but if it had to go I could bare that.

Also a thread sort of peaked my interest into seeing how large I can get my curu as I've experienced different growth from others. He's had a consistent growth throughout my time keeping him instead of slowing at 12", granted it's been slower than the commonly reported inch a month but it's been consistent. So less fish may help I thought. Better water quality most likely and more food for him lol.

I've got no friends into fish lol. I don't know anyone that is into fish actually lol. My curu is atleast 13" but I measured him atleast two months ago and he was longer than the ruler so maybe closer to 14" now , I got it about a year or two ago at 8" it didn't feed for maybe 4-6 months, or atleast that I saw. It wouldn't come out with me around the tank and is in my bedroom so... and yea that's mynheers_ something lol I've read his threads so many times I couldn't count on my hands lol, mainly cause he comm'd a curupira and 3 gold wolves. I think the only larger one was posted by greenerinks and it was his friends, it looked massive.
