I've got one too,she's not very tame and seems to bite at certain times of the month.Ive heard they can all be like that though.
A very interesting species to keep but far from easy. Patience and dedication are required to keep these temperamental creatures calm and happy.
Can be worth the effort as some are very attractive.Can also be a very expensive species to keep.
They can also give males a hard time without warning or provocation. Males sometimes need an escape route.
Hi guys! I was going to start a new thread but figured there's enough knowledgeable people in this thread that I should be able to get some help here.
We're having a bit of a delema with Rivers 4' tank. It has (what I assume is) calcium build up between the top braces and we can't get it out. We've tried everything, the last thing attempted was a bit of wool (yes, the stuff Nana used to make your baby clothes) dampened with vinegar but even that didn't fit between the sheets of glass and I feel as though cotton would either snap while in there or just not do the job. We've tried cloths, brushes, hoses and now wool with no luck.
I'll try to attach a pic but my phone is being temperamental this morning so it may not happen.
If hypothetically we were to leave it there, what are the chances of it making her sick? Where the tank will be sitting you won't be able to see it so aesthetically it isn't an issue, I just don't want to put her life at risk if I can avoid it.
A bit of the tanks history: we brought the tank from a LFS that was closing down (stores original owners built the tank many, many moons ago) and was used to house their large cichlids until they were sold. The last occupants were a pair of 8-10" parachromis (sp?) Jag cichlids that were in it for a month or so before the shop closed down. This was my favorite LFS and all their fish were always healthy, I never ever seen a dying fish in their tanks and all the fish were active etc.

To buy another tank this size will cost me over $1000 where I am and I need to get River out of the 100ltr asap, my 170ltr is currently empty so she can go in that for a bit more turning room if need be, but I really want to get her into more permanent living arrangements.. What would you guys do in my situation? Any and all help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

It's fine, it won't harm her at all. Just make sure whatever you used to scrub it didn't have any soap or that ilk. Keep your water clean, ECT ect.
I've had old tanks with that on it. If you've scrubbed it that hard with all those things and water and it didn't come off. It's not gonna come off from sitting in alittle water.

That was my thinking, I just wanted someone a little more knowledgeable than myself to confirm what I was thinking before I put her in there.
No soap was used to scrub it because I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get the residue out from under it. The only thing I've used on it is vinegar, and it'll get another thorough rinse before getting set up.

The calcium build up should be fine to leave in place, should only release minerals if anything. You can try to chip away at it with a credit card of some sort but I wont worry if it cant be removed.
Its between two panels of glass and I can't get to it. If I can't wedge a bit of wool between them I doubt I'd get a card or similar between them.
If it won't hurt her it can stay there lol

Hi guys, sorry of I'm getting annoying...
This morning I noticed what looks like Rivers vent hanging out and I'm a little worried. I've been trying all morning to get a pic of her (try for 20 mins, fail, leave for half hour, try again). The one I've uploaded is the best I can get, you can see in the pic how stressed she is by the camera following her around so I don't really want to harass her any more if I can help it.
It's hard to see in the pic but just in front of her anal fin is a bump thingy hanging down. There's no other fish in the tank with her, the water is clean (90% change done yesterday morning), she still eats well and swims normally and all the rest I'm just worried it may be something to be concerned about... Is it?
