Aggression issues, should I setup another tank?

Hey guys, need some input on this. Having a few minor aggression issues. Recently I added the mesoheros atromaculatus that I rescued from craigslist into my 90 gallon tank. They seemed healthy enough to skip the last part of quarantine so I plopped 'em in there. They already seem much happier to be out of the tiny 10 gallon they came with and thank god they started eating! Unfortunately they seem to be getting a bit bullied. Mainly it's my salvini starting this all. The only convict that attacks is the dad, and only if they get a few inches too close to his babies, the mom stays in the flowerpot. He gives up the chase fast though. Everyone was fine aggression wise before I got rid of the extra cons and jewels and added the new guys. I'm mostly just worried that the atromacs will be much too stressed. If they die replacements will be costly and I'm starting to like this species. I believe wetspot tropicals had 4 fry on aquabid for like 60 bucks but that doesn't include shipping, no guarantee on if they are males or females, so yikes! BUDGET GONE haha. I can live off everything stockpiled in my freezer though for a while hehe.

I already tried separating the salvini, put him in one of my 10 gallons overnight, didn't work. He seemed very stressed even while hiding in the cave in there so I put him back in the 90 this morning, he is already fine and trying to murder his own reflection as usual, eating everything in sight, and chasing the other guys around. He didn't forget his territory it seems. Little turd. I suppose I can sell him, don't want to if I can avoid it though, that fish has been on my must have list for a long time and he was very difficult to get ahold of at his size. I really don't want to part with my convict pair either, they are so fun to watch and their bond is very strong. Seems like they have produced a few marbled babies this time too and I want to keep them to feed the regular fry and eggies to the other fish as food along with the guppies. I'm thinking maybe a small ghetto barebones tank just for them. The main problem is the dad is massive for a convict, about 6.5". He needs to be able to swim freely. Do you think something tiny like a 29 gallon if there are no additional tankmates or whatnot would do the trick? Maintenance several times a week isn't' an issue for me.

The rest of my fish are pretty chill towards the newcomers. I'm probably gunna leave the atromacs in the 90 as the single cichlid species though if they change their minds and turn into jerks.

I will most likely get some type of extra tank through the dollar per gallon sale at petco or through craigslist (but craigslist always ends up with me getting more rescues that I can't turn down when they show pics of empty tanks.... grr). I can't go bigger than a 75, don't have the room. I would upgrade to something like a 150 to 225 from the 90 but after thinking about it and discussing it with the fiance, tearing it down and having to store all the fish in tubs would suck. If I got one moving it would be an absolute pain in the ass too. I would have to rent a truck and probably hire guys to help install it. Plus actually moving the tank through the apartment door would be nigh impossible haha, let alone if the landlord sees how huge it is (pretty sure she thinks I only have small nano tanks or whatever looolll). Storing it until I can sell it would be a big issue as well. Out of room in this dump. I suppose I can move the kitchen table to the patio and move stuff around here but ehhhhh. I want to avoid it at all costs if possible. The atromacs seem like they still have some growing to do (guy said they were in a 40b before so hopefully they aren't stunted) so the 90 should be ok for now. Thankfully they have plenty of tall plants to hide in and I will be getting a big driftwood or more river rocks next week to create more sight breaks.

Thoughts????? I need to save money if possible since this will only be from about 200 bucks in christmas money and I would like to save on space in here. I would try more dithers but no one in there even pays attention to the sae's or small pleco I already have and I'm out of quarantine tanks except that 10, which is gunna be a valentine's surprise with hardy tiny fishies for the fiance so meh haha.

This is often a problem when adding new cichlids to an already established tank. The other cichlids, especially very territorial ones like convicts and salvini have already broken down the entire tank into separate territories, and there is no room for the new comers. And since these cichlids already invested heavily in the new territories, they defend them fiercly, often to the demise of any new comers.
It is always best to put all cichlids into a tank at once, and not add new ones.
Best to get the atromaculatum their own tank, and preferably a large enough one for them to grow into.
Some people are successful by totally rearranging decor so territorial lines are offset. This fools some cichlids some of the time, but is 50/50 at best, especially with the strongly territorial types you already have.

I was thinking of maybe moving all my stuff around completely anyway since the convicts spit sand all over and ruined my little rock formation. I will try that if I have time this week. I have been wanting to move my plants into better positions since they are growing a bit better and get the driftwood to attach plants to it on top of the rocks. I can also move the fry into my guppy tank to calm the convicts down at least for a little while, might be a feeding frenzy for them though, some new guppies appeared!

But I will try to source out a second tank to at least separate the atromacs into a large volume of water asap. I can cycle it pretty much instantly since the ac110 filter needs new media anyway and I can spare a lot of sand from the 90. Gotta wait for the fiance to get off work, I'll probably convince him to get me said tank in the next few days. Maybe I won't have to sell the salvini after all. :D

As an update I found a small 29 gallon acrylic tank with a very nice looking wood stand on craigslist for less than 100 bucks hopefully if the guy will negotiate a little. I'd just need the substrate and plant lights haha. I hope that will curb some of the aggression. If separating the convicts doesn't help the salvini to stop being a douche I will sell him then and keep the convicts in there for however long, after seeing a 29 gallon at the store I think it should be ok with just the convicts. If they end up eating fry if it's too small then I'll be oh so sad......

That's way too much money for a 29 gal, mostly because none of those fish belong in something that small, it'll just be a waste of money.
For that kind of money you should be able to find a 100+gal tank on Craigslist or similar site .
I realize some people will try to get monster money on those sites, but that's delusional, I've been able to get 150 gal tanks with stand for @ $50.

I would get a 150 as I said but I do not have the room and can't move it by myself. The 29 is the standard 30 inches long so I'm not worried about space. The convicts in the 90 occupy about a 3rd of it and seem content. The only thing going in there is the convicts. Not worried about algae eating tankmates since I want the fry to eat it before I use them as feeders. The female is actually very small, only about 2". Not worried about the male too much since he's old anyway if he croaks. I will be adding a second ac20 to it for extra filtration.

If it doesn't work out I can give the tank to my fiance's parents who have wanted to start some sort of fish thing up, and his aunt had nano and giant reefs before so she could use it too. Or I will just use it for fry or maybe a cool shrimp tank. Meh.

Similar setups at the lfs were around 400 bucks total for nice ones not including equipment. Even petco here was more expensive for the tank and stand even with the dollar per gallon sale and I want something more durable than some made in china particle board bs supporting all that weight. Fiance keeps harassing me about glass breaking too and he won't shut up about it haha. Plus the guy lives in the same neighborhood as me so it's worth it to me to save the gas since our suv gets crap milage lol. The next cheapest one that was bigger and looked as good was up in like vista and I'm not driving that far.

My convicts were totally happy in their 40b before I moved em to the 125. They bred well, and dealt with 99% of the fry for me. In the 125... They're not eating the babies anymore so I have to deal with it. Happy to save some pink convicts to sell this time though :)

Well, already made a deal with the guy, picking it up soon. Should be fun doing some aquascaping again since I have extra rocks laying about.

I've been trying to get marbles. Hopefully I will have a few in this batch from a black and pink pair, some look like they are lacking pigments. I would have got a 40 breeder but no one had one within like 50 miles.

GamerChick, also check Face Book for tanks. I've seen some decent deals.
I don't use facebook but my fiance has one, next time I need a different tank I will look there. Totally forgot they have like a classifieds thing haha.
