Is this a male green spotted severum?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They're like all severums. If you keep several in a large enough tank they are fine, though they'll get very territorial during spawning. I recommend 6' tanks for groups. Keeping only a couple increases your chance that a dominant fish will emerge and endlessly harass the submissive one. I like to keep them in community tanks with other cichlids. It keeps them distracted.

They are not hard to spawn. I breed mine in Florida tap water with a pH in the high 7s and a TDS around 150 - 200ppm. The secret to all Heros is clean water. Do regular water changes. I do large ones weekly. I keep them all at 80 - 82F.

Larger than 50 percent? They are in a 135 right now but I just got another 135 on CL. I'm going to paint it and get it ready for fish. If the one at the wetspot is female then I might pick it up.

It depends on your stocking level. I always drain my SA tanks down to the sand and then refill. A lot of blackwater fish are prone to HITH and other health issues if their water isn't very clean, so I don't take chances. So far I've had great success that way. 50% weekly is a good starting point. You could always adjust later if you noticed any issues.

I do at least 60-70% weekly water changes
At 78-80 degrees. So far I think all my fish are happy. If you want a female notatus they look different then males they don't have spots I'll show you
Female first pic
Male second

Awesome! Thanks! I'm going to increase my water change to 70 percent. Right now on my 135, I'm running a fx 5, 4penguin 350 hob and x-large filistar canister so water is super clean. I'm going to call the wet spot later to see if they have a male or female before heading over there this weekend. You said the female destroyed your stock, was that due to her trying to protect her eggs?

Yah both female and male went really aggressive towards the rest of the tank mates because they were about to spawn. Normal behavior for spawning pairs

wish you could of got some fry out of these! but would of been a hassle i know.
In the future bro I will get more tanks and setup up a few more tanks in the garage. I have all males so I would just search for females again

Yup, I have 12 tanks running. And 14 empty ones. My gf says I can only set up 2 more unless I can find 300 gallon plus on sale.

I wouldn't mind several big tanks like maybe 2x 180s and a 240-300 but I don't have the space atm

nice, I would like them one day as babies with some other Severums. We need to find some super red head shoulder ones haha.

that would be some nice fish action with those big tanks. If you find a 100 gallon or 120 footer still let me know Alex!
