I'm back! And trying my best to pick up where I left off. :)

In keeping with my tradition of naming my fish after Game of Thrones characters, and in honor of how much yellow this fish is beginning to display, I decided to name him after the fabled leader of the Golden Company: Maelys the Monstrous. :)

This fish is very special to me. I am currently battling cancer, and just after I went under the knife and recovering, I had a little money burning a hole in my pocket. I decided that some of this money would be well spent in filling up my fish tank with some of my favorite kinds of fish. Well, I absolutely love jurs (even more than tigs lol), so I figured I may as well look into them.

Sure enough, Mark at Discus Origins had six for sale. I asked him to send me pics of his stock so I could pick my fish, if it wasn't too much trouble. Sure enough, he obliged. I found one specimen that was quite exceptional to my eyes and requested it.

This is when the story got weird.

The next day, I was told the fish was accidentally sold in an in-store transaction. I was kinda bummed, but I kept looking for another jur that was that special 'just right' caliber to want to spend my little bit of spending cash on. Things got even weirder at this point when my wife started telling me that she didn't think it was a good idea to get more fish, even though she is normally fine with it as long as the bills are paid. Hmmm.

Cut to a few days later, and I have to go with her to run errands. I'm convalescing from the surgery, and don't really feel like it, but I said what the heck and went. We ended up at UPS getting a box, which contained the fish I wanted! Turns out some friends saw that I was getting ready to buy the jur and played the best trick on me ever and bought it! Big, big props to Aw3s0m3 Aw3s0m3 for spearheading this for me. I hate you too, dickhead. :)

Anyway, this thread is worthless without pics!

The pic Mark sent me from which I made my decision; it's easy to see the unusually good contrast and amount of yellow this fish has for a ~5" fish-

The day after going in the tank. He's thin, but that's typical of new imports IME. He eats like a champ though!

A couple days later, settled in well with nice colors. A cell phone shot.

A shot from the same day with the good camera, but against the front glass and therefore difficult to hit properly with the flash to show his colors well. This is a running problem with this fish.

Two weeks later, fattening up nicely. A cell phone shot-maelys 20170430a.jpg

The first of May. He's grown noticably by now, and getting a LOT of yellow.

Today. He's continue to lighten up some and the yellowish tinge continues to spread. I think this fish is gonna be a show stopper. :)

They are awesome cats one of my favorite. Good luck with the battle and growing the jur to a monster size.

Again Rob, sorry to hear about what you're going through but it is awesome that you've got great people doing what they can to support you. That Jur is gorgeous, bro. One of my all time fave catfish species. Personally I actually like them over Tigs. And you're right, yours looks like it's gonna be a stunner. Can't wait to see more pics as he puts on size.

Good to hear your back :) it is indeed filling out nicely, you will take care of it just as it will take care of some of your stress I'm sure. It was nice of him to do that for you. The fish is a stunner as is and will only get better. As I said before, I wish you the best

I hope your return now will last forever... well, at least until I kick my favorite yellow bucket anyway :) There is only one thing remaining now - we need Necrocanis back and my world would be balanced and complete :)

Your threads and posts are invariably a treat in my eyes. I always learn from them and enjoy the visuals.

That jur does look different. I've got 10 of them from snookn21 a few months back. None of mine look like that. The banding varies in mine but none appear to have the yellowish hues yours has.

Since you don't shy away from sharing your life with us, I'll ask here. Feel free to ignore or answer in a pm. I thought your going underground a couple of years back was due to a messy divorce, no? Now I read you got a serious health scare and a new (?) wife. Am I reading it all right? So very sorry to hear, bro. I hope and pray you will come out of it a stronger man in both spirit and body.

Real awesome accomplishment by Ivan Aw3som3 and his accomplices, including your best half. That's a friend with a big heart.

Thanks brother! I actually like them better than tigs, too. If they had the same colors as juveniles as they do as adults, I honestly think that they'd be more popular than tigs. :D

We're a minority in the hobby right now, but after I grow this bad boy out, I think they'll jump in popularity. ;)

Thank you! This dude is a glutton and is growing quick. I think he's gonna do well for me :D

Thanks bro!

They normally get 20-24 inches, but they're slow growers. In the longest long term, they may get bigger, but I've yet to see it confirmed for sure.

Thank you Viktor! It's good to be back. :)

Yes, I was going through a messy divorce. The past three years have been hell for me. Two years ago, I had fallen so far that I was homeless and stranded in Dallas, living in my car.

I found out in May of 2013 four months after my son was born in that I had to be out of the army in February. I was a mid career noncommissioned officer, and with the post war drawdown, they simply didn't need me anymore. The retention quota for my battalion for 2013 was filled, and my ets date was before the 2014 retention window opened. So, my career was over.

Mind you now, when I got out, I landed a job as a fisheries biologist making what was good money for the part of the country I was in, but it was pennies on the dollar compared to a mid career noncommissioned officer. I couldn't pay my bills. Through 2014, my life fell apart. My wife and I started fighting and we both had a lot of growing up to do.

The next two years were pure hell. Through hurt and anger, my wife and I drifted apart and were one step away from finishing the divorce. After a couple of years of the wildest ****ery you could imagine, we had both grown up a lot and started to drift back together. Stress and hurt drove us apart, but we never stopped loving each other.

They are stunners but, but IMO it's your passion that contagious. Man IMHO you single-handedly brought Goonch to the appreciated cat they are. Never mind your contributions to the Characin section among others.

Glad to see you back and on a good path! It just disgust me how vets are treated in this country! Not one of you should ever be homeless!!! Back to fish. With the juruense I had, they would perch on fake plants, right under the water surface and eat from my hands. Very cool fish!
