How is there a difference? There's a spectrum of possible patterns with these fish, what qualifies as a FZ seems arbitrary from one person to the next. I've yet to see someone justify what makes a FZ as opposed to a normal jur.I'm with you T1. There are two distinct Juruense cats: normals and flash tigers. Classifying the former is like classifying zebras. Their stripes are random by nature, so classifying them is pointless, IMO.
And I've seen plenty of genuine flash tigers. The reason you don't see them as of late is price. From what I've seen these past few years, TRUE flash tigers are 50-100% more expensive than the cost of a similar sized tigrinus cat.
Lol krich that's the same thing as mine, and I doubt would qualify as "FZ" to T1KARMANN or shookONES just like mine doesn't to them. It's a nice looking fish to be sure though! This rather proves my point that sellers call what they feel are their nicest examples 'flash zebras' when there's no real basis for it.I didn't make a thread on it but here is an older photo that I took a while back.
[awesome pic]
Those are my black eared sharks in the background.
Almost all jurs if kept long enough develop those kinds of colors though, especially if kept in soft water. In a classic sense, a flash zebra is a Juruense that's black and orange, not black and white. I've seen what I'm calling a flash on only a handful of occasions in my career. The most recent we're no more than 6" and looked drastically different than what you guys are calling FZ.
Good to know! lolI never bought into flash zebra being a separate or sub species or anything like that but just a regional variant. I got it in June of last year.
Jurs get to 2'. They are easy to keep, not channel or bullhead or walking catfish hardy, but quite hardy. A lot has been written on them as they are popular. It'd be worth your time to read their profiles on Planet Catfish, both Cat-eLog and Cat of the Month article, and Seriously Fish, also ScotCat, Fish Base, Aquatic community, Aqualand, Tropical Fish Keeping, etc. Plus use the search function in this forum. You will learn a ton in 1-2 hours.First, please let me start off with my condolences to you. I am sorry to hear that you have cancer. You have been through a lot and you have my thoughts and prayers. You will def overcome this.
How big do jurense catfish get? They have always been a fish on my list. How hard are they to keep?
That is good to hear that they are quite hardy. I have planet catfish and scotcat on my favorites thing on my google chrome. I am currently looking at the FZ page right now. Interesting, may have to get one.FWIW, I am both with Chix and Shook.
I agree that my experience over many years too has shaped to only include orange and bright yellow colored jurs as FZ and other "standard" colors of white, gray, off white, dirty white, slightly yellowish, copper, brown, etc. etc., no matter the pattern of the dark coloration, I'd not call FZ.
That's why in 2013, when we had these FZ discussions on here, I was so surprised to hear people refer to so many jurs as FZ, like current Chix's and Krich's ones, as examples, while in my impression they were not.
Yet, I am all for Chix to attempt sorting it out, especially now that he is a diploma-wielding biologist. It'll be good for all of us and we all should chip within our means to help him along - pics, vids, any and all info, anything that he could use.
As Chix, I've never seen small "FZ"s for sale so I am again with him and would like to see them.
