Maelys the flash zebra catfish (Brachyplatystoma juruense) growout thread

I always joke that small Brachy. cats are stupid, and I don't mean it in a bad way. Every small one I've grown out (tigrinus, juruense, platynema) have done best in small enclosures. I usually start out babies in small acrylic boxes hung in my main tank with minimal decor. In a confined space, they're much better at eating and less inclined to bash their faces into the side of the tank when startled.

Thats good to know as i planned on groeing the cats iut in a 150. I figured bigger = better lol if it struggles i'll move it back to the 75. Also have a 20 gal i could use

Agree with Rob's description of jur feeding. They appear to prefer to sit in the flow, all barbels spread out, and wait for food to hit a barbel.

I throw food in my tanks all together twice a day, about a handful of pellets and cut fish all at once. The flow in my tank is strong and directed. Plenty hits their barbels usually.

Yup smaller the better. Just don't let water quality go by the wayside in a smaller tank.

Also worth noting, be careful mixing with polys. I've always had issues with lower jaw polys chomping on tails

Well, it pains me to report this, but I've lost Maelys. Thanks to J jaws7777 for reminding me that I forgot to share this.

I was away all last weekend, and came home to find a 10" stick of catfish jerky on the floor behind my tank. I've got lids and a hood, but he managed to find the hole in the back of my hood where the plumbing enters the tank.

I was absolutely gutted at the loss of this guy. I've never lost a catfish to jumping before, and it came as quite a surprise. I have no clue what caused it. I guess Ser Barristan came for him. :/
