I suspect that that salesman already knew damned well what your insurance rep later told you about them covering the dealer's vehicle during a test drive and he lied in order to get you to sign their contract.

Hope S skjl47 has luck finding a new car at a much better car dealership with out any of the BS.
Car sales men are some of the sneakiest people. For someone who hasn't ever drove or purchased a car like myself, it would be easy for us to fall into their trap. But it reminds me to do research first.

Hello; Yes the language on the form was clear about the financial liability eventually falling on me personally.

I have full coverage on a car and a truck and if I give someone permission to drive either they are covered by the insurance.

I have for years figured dealerships have the same sort of insurance coverage as a type of fleet coverage on all their vehicles. As I stated in my first post on the issue, this is a very new thing to me. I do not yet know the ins and outs of this. It may be many dealers have insurance to cover customer test drives and that other dealerships may have lesser coverage.

I do not see how making customers cover this potential liability during a test drive is a good business practice.

This is new to me. I do not have any idea how long or how common the practice may be. So far no one I have spoken to personally knew of this. I posted on this forum in the hope someone here will have some information.

Hello; I did some internet searches. The answers vary. Some say the dealer is responsible. Some say you can be especially if you broke a law such as speeding. Some say it can go either way. The best bit of information seems to be to check with your insurance agent to see if you have coverage when you rent a car or do a test drive.
I guess it can also vary by the state or country where you live.

I actually have a good story about taking my vehical into the dealership for an oil change.
I was still at work and having one of those days that if I could go wrong it was screwing parts up, machine not wanting to fit together blew the belt off my mill and it wedge in the pulleys so bad it took me an hour and a half to just get it apart.
Then my girlfriend pulls in to pick me up from work in a loaner car. I was thinking wtf is going on here..... turns out the oil change kid at Ford dealership drove my vehical into the bench, he said his foot slipped of the break but i have wrecked enough vehicals to know bs when I hear it. Ended up needing new hood, grill, bumper, rad saddle, a.c. condenser, rad, passenger fender.
Also took 3 times for them to get the paint right

I would be PO - what should have been routine, ended up being damaged car, being lied to, and, worst paint not matching!
