Official Off Topic Discussion Thread #1

Here is my question, do any of you have any insight about this? I stopped by my insurance agents shop today but he was not in. The lady who works there has the opinion that my insurance is not any good on a vehicle I do not own. This would mean I would be personally liable for any damage and my insurance would not have to pay at all. I have test driven many cars over the decades and this is the first time such a thing has come up.
I always thought the dealerships had some sort of insurance on the cars on their lot to cover the test drives, but now that assumption is not so certain. I was told one of the employees could drive me around on the highway and be covered. I said no thanks to that.

Should this prove to be a common practice it makes the act of taking a test drive a potentially expensive activity. We could be on the hook for expensive repairs on a car we do not own.

This was a new car at a major brand dealership if that information is of use.

It's been a long time since I"ve test driven a new car, but, I do recall them taking a copy of DL and proof of insurance. Based on my understanding, but I should verify with my own insurance, that I am covered even for a vehicle I don't own. But the devils in the details, and maybe my insurance may not cover as if it was my car.

Hello; I did some internet searches. The answers vary. Some say the dealer is responsible. Some say you can be especially if you broke a law such as speeding. Some say it can go either way. The best bit of information seems to be to check with your insurance agent to see if you have coverage when you rent a car or do a test drive.
I guess it can also vary by the state or country where you live.

This is aligned with what I think as well...as mentioned in my other post, I'll need to verify and it's all in the details.

I hate stealerships in general, but I can understand why they put liability on the customer in some cases. Anytime I test drove a (new) car, they never go with me. I don't think it really changes my driving behavior, but you can imagine how people with drive "like they stole it" and increase the chances of getting into reckless accidents.

just did test drives with my brother last weekend, he was looking for a truck, had no problems test driving, he just needed a copy of his driver licence, we drove it for quite a bit. My brother bought it, but they would not let him drive off with it after buying without proof of insh.
