After looking into my 30 gallon cichlid tank as a daily inspection I discovered 13 teeny little babies swimming around inside a rock cave. I quickly panicked and began to put plexiglass in between the cave and the rest of the cichlids to prevent them from getting eaten.

I definitely suspect that the babies were made from two brichardis I had in there. Guys please tell me what to do, what to feed them, is there not enough water movement and cycling within the plexiglass, etc etc. Just tell me each and ever step I should make to maintain them being healthy and happy.

Thanks

Congrats on finding the fry. I suggest placing a sponge filter or a small hob but make sure you cover the intake with a sponge or even a new knee high stocking can be used. As for feeding just crush up pellet or flake that you have and they should eat that.

Thanks for the reply :). i have a seperate small filter but i feel that it'll create too big of a current within the plexiglass, unless you think otherwise. Is there anything else I should know about fry in general as I'm taking care of them.

Other than keeping up with water changes so they can grow to their full potential thats all I can really think of atm. If you think the current from the filter will be too strong as you stated don't use but keep that area pristine.

Brichardi defend territory as family groups. As soon as the fry are free swimming, they will chip in to defend the colony, and the smaller fry. In Lake Tanganyika, They can live in colonies hundreds of thousands strong. If you leave the colony in your tank, it will slowly take over and drive all of its tankmates into the corners, regardless of size or ferocity. Brichardi can probably outbreed convicts, and they make very good parents, siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and grandparents. A half inch fry can stand up to a dovii if it has 80,000 clan members to back it up :) I almost bought some, but was told that this is what would happen and backed out.

Sadly all the baby brichardis died... and I honestly have no idea why. I came home one day to check up on the babies and I noticed that I couldn't see any. After closer inspection I realized that 7 of the 12 already fully decomposed so I couldnt even see them anymore, and the other 5's bodies were still visible because their bodies were still intact, but were still all dead. I checked the ammonia and nitrates and they werent even close to dangerous levels. Just the day before they were doing absolutely fine. The last time I had fed them was around 24 hours before I found them dead. They were all in a breeder net inside the tank. What could possibly have happened???? Any theories???? Please reply

They are very delicate in regard to nitrate, both because they are fry and because they are from Lake Tanganyika. They also may need a lot of aeration, as the parents may fan the eggs like angelfish and many others (I have no idea.) The only good thing is that if you have a pair, you will probably have more fey in a weekor two.

next time should I just leave the fry as they are?
