I've kept them with other aggressive fish, Amphilophus and Vieja. I wouldn't recommend it based on my personal experience but I reckon a pleco would be fine.
Awesome, that was one of the main reasons I was hesitant to get one. How similar are vieja to flowerhorn personality wise? I read somewhere that the vieja were one of the fish flowerhorn were hybridized from. Not sure if that's true though.

I'm not sure to be honest. Vieja are my favorite centrals, big personalities and gorgeous but can be very aggressive. lol for the record I do not recommend housing flowerhorns and vieja together.

Here are some other options that would be fine solo in a 125-150 long term
N. Tetracanthus
C. Grammodes
C. Istlanum
V. Breidohri
A. Saggitae/Citrinellum/lyonsi/labiatus/trimaculatus (any amphilophus really)
H. Carpintis
N. Tetracanthus is a pretty small fish to be all alone in a 150.

Out of all the fish suggested I think I've narrowed my choices down to either a flowerhorn or V. Breidohri. Unless the V. Breidohri could be mixed with a pleco and maybe a few other similarly sized fish I'll probably just go for the flowerhorn and have a single wet pet.
If you do cyprinids or characins instead of other cichlids, it would work much smoother. Some examples are: Silver Dollars, Scissortail rasboras, chalceous, Boesmanni Rainbows, Spanner Barbs
Non-cichlids tend not to arouse as much aggression in cichlids and they also are less likely to create aggression issues of their own.

Trust me I would have never dreamed of it lol. That just sounds like a blood bath waiting to happen.

looks big enough to me :)
Could always be housed with some non-cichlids to fill the tank as you suggest, or do a pair.

Okay good haha. Just wasn't sure if I was communicating clearly or not. Are you settled on the Flowerhorn? Jeff Rapps has Vieja Breidohri in stock

What is wrong with keeping a fish in a more than adequately sized tank?

I'm still not completely sure yet. I still need to wait for my 40 breeder to finish cycling (it was just recently set up). The fish I get needs to be small enough to fit in this tank for a few months. Maybe I'm just not seeing really colorful Viejas online but most of them appear to be this light grey color. I think I'm going to go for a Flowerhorn. They seem to have the color and attitudes I want.

Because one 7 inch fish in a six foot tank is not going to be very interesting to look at.
EDIT: Wrong fish. I thought you were talking about Neolamprologus Tetracanthus. Sorry.
