Im about to buy a 100 gallon tank 5ft long about 2ft tall and about 2ft front to back. My plan for the tank is a cichlid tank not african. I was planing to put a jaguar in it with maybe 2 convict cichlids or maybe a madagascar cichlid what type of cichlid would be best with a jaguar cichlid. I know there better off alone but im courious would best be for a tank mate

First off, I would check your tank dimensions. A 5x2x2 would be more like 150 gallons.
Typically a 4 x2 x2 would be around 120 gallons.
If your tank is only 100 gallons I would suggest a smaller parachromis species such as freidrichthrali. These will grow no more than 12 inches as apposed to nearly 20 in the case of an adult male jag.
A lot of people will say convicts will work with lots of hiding places, and they may. I would not want to be reincarnated as one of those guys though.A life running scared, dashing from hidey hole to hole is not to appealing.
Each to their own,but I would choose more peaceful and accommodating cichlids for 100 gallons.

Armoured catfish that get no bigger than 10 inches but bigger than 6.
I would provide it plenty of cover too.

I also agree if you plan on a cichlid community, a smaller Parachromis would work better, managuense can become quite aggressive in medium size tanks like you are planning.
And depending on what type Malagasy cichlid you mean, some are shoaling type, some are not.
If you are thinking Paratilapia,

this genus often works well as a single species, but if you are thinking Paretroplus,

most of these (except nourissatti) are shoaling, working best in a group of 4 or more, and "then" depending on species, may become too large in a shoal in a 150 gal, for any other fish except the Paretroplus shoal at adulthood.
My Paretroplus menerambo easily went from 2" to 15" in less than 2 years and outgrew my 150 gal 6 ft tank.

And though Paretroplus tend not to be aggressive with other cichlids, in too small a tank, will become hyper aggressive, or sometimes when kept as individuals, become sociopathic.
Paretroplus kieneri are relatively smaller ones in the genus and may also be a good choice as far as aggression goes, but still shoals.

Another Madagascan genus is Ptychochromis which may work well in that size tank

you got some good ideals, I would stay away from a jag, tank just not big enof and they can have a real tendency to not play fair. having fish that are not a proper size for the tank or compatible can make fish keeping a real pain in the arse for you, and your fish.
