Hi,
I'm looking into methods to lower nitrate in my 180 gallon freshwater. I don't have problems with nitrate, and do regular water changes, but I want the water to be as good as possible. I don't have a sump (just canister filters), so is there any way to use one of these bio denitrator devices without making a sump? https://www.marinedepot.com/Bio_Denitrators_Nitrate_Reactors-FIFRISDN-ct.html

If not, what about seachem denitrate? Is there a canister filter with a low enough flow rate (50 gph or less) to make this effective?

Any other methods?

Thanks! - Nick

Some members have their aquarium on a drip system but as philipraposo1982 philipraposo1982 stated more wc's and plants.

I’m gone a lot and don’t have the ability to do more water changes than once weekly. Don’t want to deal with plants and I have a bare bottom tank

What is the bio load in your tank, perhaps you could lower it?.....how much water are you changing at a time and lastly, which cannisters are you running?

What are your nitrates? If they're under 20 or so then you're really just adding more work and stress by trying to get it lower for no significant improvement for most fish.

Also I and trying out for the first time a Penn plaxx canister filter 1000. Please tell me what's best gravel or sand. I'd like to try sand for once. Thx happy New Year to ALL

You could try pothos plants or an internal algae scrubber, the king of diy has a toutourial on this

It would be better for you to start your own thread .....and Nick already stated that he does not want to deal with plants.
