First Polypterus: need advice!

Lol, I've been meaning to but the little fella's shy. He spends most of the day perched on the filter or hiding beneath plants. And what good is a picture of the tank if you can't see the poly?

I was trying to take a good picture today when I noticed a few detritus worms on the glass.
Can't figure out where they came from. The poly rarely leaves any food uneaten and I siphon out his poop as soon as I see it. I vacuum the sand and do big water changes two-three times a week too. I blame the java moss I bought off a local seller that promptly started dying in my tank. And I suspect my Fluval isn't providing quite enough aeration.Spent over an hour rinsing out the tank, changing the water and experimenting with filters. I'd like to replace the Fluval with another filter with higher gph but the media isn't colonized yet and if I put both in the tank, my poly seems stressed by the strong current.
Honestly I highly recommend sponge filters, they do the job and they're easy to maintain. They can be an eyesore, but it's nothing you can't fix with a bit of clever scaping. Sorry to hear about the worms, I haven't encountered them before.
Can't take any better photos without getting in the tank, lol. The tank itself is nothing to brag about. I'm waiting to add some wood and more plants.

The new filter I mentioned is one I put together using a powerhead though it contains both ceramic rings and a sponge. I could make it sponge only. But I have to figure out a way to colonize it without running both filters on the tank. Maybe I'll set up another small tank or a bucket and dose with ammonia...
