By the way, I don't suppose any of you keep polypterus in a heavily planted tank? I was wondering if it's safe to supplement with liquid carbon.

I had them in a heavily planted tank but it was low tech. I only dosed with Flourish and Root Tabs.
People here have used "egg crate" - the plastic kind with square holes - for temporary lids in a pinch. Not sure how much that affects your plant lights but at least you won't have a dried up poly on your hands.

When polys get startled they can jump surprisingly far distances. The lower water helps for sure but doesn't make it impossible. Also, lower water means that you're more likely to have water quality issues pop up more quickly. 30 gallons of water will be easier to keep stable but also help you manage the flow with whatever filter you choose. I used an Eheim and loved it. Super quiet, and you can get multi-piece outputs so you can really direct the flow in different spots. Only thing about canisters is the maintenance which can be a pain.
I bet you could get a lid online pretty quickly and relatively inexpensively. It really should be a priority.

I'll get started on the lid just as soon as I finish my end-of-term paper.
Time for another update. I've almost finished the lid. But I'm more concerned now about a dark spot I noticed above one of my poly's eyes. This is the clearest picture I could get at the moment. What do you all think? Should I be concerned?
He's eating very well and his behaviour hasn't changed. I did put the second filter on the tank so the water flow and aeration are much better now.

Wouldn’t worry. Just watch it’s behavior and the spot.
