More than one suspect here imo. If it's their first time it wouldn't be such a surprise if they failed, it can take a few tries to get it right. And if it's a clown loach and he has any size to him, it wouldn't surprise me if it ate, or tried to eat, the eggs. They're not really a fish I like to keep with breeding cichlids.
Clown loaches ime aren't so much outwardly aggressive as they are pushy if they can get away with it, more so once they get some size to them. They remind me of the sort of big kid in 2nd or 3rd grade who isn't mean, exactly, but kind of bumbles around and pushes his weight around to get what he wants unless there's someone else to keep him in his place. You might see more of this if the loaches aren't in a group.
