Open water I do not see much beating a full grown Alligator Gar. Arapima gigas are also up there but the teeth and armor scales of an alligator gar just give it a huge advantage.

If we are talking every fish at the same size then either a snakehead or Tiger Fish based on speed and aggression.
Wels, aka Silurus gigas, in any match like that.

Well I would think that if a wels and a gator gar are the same size the Wels could not win purely on the teeth factor. It would have to swallow the Gator gar whole which if he attempted, would choke on and die.

Also- the world record gator gar is larger than the world record wels catfish so I do not see it winning these battles purely on that.

Just my two cents though

Still don't see any of those winning against a black swallower of similar size
Well a black swallower is a salt water fish and I was just assuming we were doing freshwater here. Because if that is not the case it opens up to a ton more.

to be honest if we are talking the same size and going with your logic of pure swallowing strength it would be hard for anything to beat a gulper catfish purely on the fact they will just eat something with one bite.

Agreed, I assumed he meant all fish groups?

Yes, but gator gars are not very aggressive, and wels are. A gator gar may snap at or eat its tankmates, but a wels is capable of brutal, cichlid style aggression. I would place my vot based on temperament.

Personally I don’t think much of anything can take down a Goliath Tigerfish. The mix of aggression, power, and tools are perfect to finish anything.
