Our brown bullheads, northern and southern

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here is a Northern brown bullhead that was in one of my eel pots. Juveniles are typically black, but turn more brownish with age. View attachment 1295825

Minus two northern brothers.

When we lost our umbee, duanes duanes suggested it was columnaris. The swelling and behavioral symptoms of these two bullheads were superficially similar, as was the timing too.

So if I had to guess, I'd say columnaris.

We had had them for roughly 2.5 years staring from 1.5" in a 240 gal and their final measures were 12.5" and 13.5".

Good tank mates, never noted to cause any problems.

They weren't that fat or swollen at all before they got sick but rather fit.

Thank you, guys.

Also, I was looking over your max. sizes and thought it's worth noting that snail bullheads get quite large, certainly over 20 inches. Here are a couple photos of larger specimens..View attachment 1332394 View attachment 1332395

Those are cool bullheads. Thanks. Most max sizes say on PCF are subject to change and anyone can effect it by sending in the evidence - a photo of a fish with a measure tape next to it. While these cats are indeed relatively huge, it's hard to gauge as the anglers are doing their usual cheap trick. I wish they haven't. Or much rather, I wish they included a measure tape in the shot.
