So is zquil just an overdose of diphenhydramine?

Wouldn't call it overdose, but basically yes. Diphenhydramine is the active ingredient in almost all sleep aids. The biggest problem with it is your body will build up an immunity to it over time and then you will have a reverse effect. Sleep aids with diphenhydramine worked for me for a while, but after taking them for a couple months nightly I started having issues like restless legs and just not being able to sleep because of the restlessness. So it's a short term pill, not long term. That's why I started taking Melatonin, you don't get the side effects with it like you do other things.

I haven't thought about melatonin. I get about 5hrs during the week and 7 on the weekend.

Its starting to wear on me though as I get older

Yep the older you get the more it wears on ya that's for sure. When I was in my 20's and early 30's I could do 5hrs and be okay the next day, but as I've got older I can't do that anymore without feeling run down and even seem to get a higher heart rate when I only get a few hours sleep. Now that I'm nearing 50 I usually need about 7 hrs to feel good the next day.

Oh ok. I only take it 2-3 nights tops. Then it’s months before I’ll use it again. I hate taking anything so it’s normally done out of desperation. Lol
I’ll look into melatonin though. It sounds like it would be a better alternative.
