The danger here that I see is staying away from large and quick pH swings. Any time we try to artificially maintain a pH, it is wrought with things that can and do go wrong sooner or later.

pH is in general overrated. It bears a 10x smaller effect than people generally give it, but when it is stable.

It sounds like you have the experience with the almond leaves though.
i will add the almond leaves slowly, as like you said, rapid fluctuations in pH usually leads to the fish unable to take in sufficient oxygen.

I think my water is soft enough so it will not change the ph too much, but the antimicrobial properties of the Indian almond leaves will prevent infections due to the shedding of the epidermis of the gulper is what I’m looking to get out of the addition of the leaves

Oh isn't that important long term, but it is best to slowly acclimate them to it.

Many central and South American fish require tannins for long term health, it helps stave off bacterial, fungal and possibly even aids in protecting in parasitic infections.

What are you planning to feed your gulper?

I’m planning to feed cut up shrimp and fish fillet, no live feeders like goldfish or anything.
