Very true. Im going to let my son spear head this once he calms down. Plan on giving him a list of fish and have him do the research by himself.
My fear is this turning him away from the hobby. Kids are weird like that. Tank is in the basement along with most of their toys today was the 1st time i can remember that he didnt head down stairs after home work. Understandable
Wow frank sorry for the lost. The EXACT same thing happened to my Flowerhorn as I was doing a waterchange(actually shutting down my tank) I left him at fin level for 20min give or take. During that time I believed he had a big fat air bubble or something stuck in him which made it impossible for him to be up right. I’d ended up putting him out of misery

I had to move some fish around while the bins and tank were emptying and filling. I took the time to record the odd behavior.
The heterospilus wouldnt leave his side from when i 1st found him like this. She even appeared to nudge the big guy a few times and basically stood by his side until i netted him. Even the net didnt scare her off.

I saw the same thing with my Festae pair.
The female continued to try an nudge the big man over trying to help him.
At least that’s what it looked like.
I lost him last year on super bowl Sunday that’s how remember I had to stop watching and deal with his passing.
After he was removed from the tank she lost all color which with Festae isn’t unusual.
Lots of females will not show there best colors without a male and vice versus.
But she stopped eating and came down with a nasty eye infection.
I tried treatment but it didn’t work and just a few months from his death she died also.
Coincidence? Maybe, Grieving to death I don’t know.
I think fish can bond.
Maybe I’m seeing emotions where there are none? They can’t tell us so who knows.
When my oscar was doing the whirl of death, my jag would slightly nudge it even when it was faced down and tail up (still alive). Both the jag and oscar had already regulated themselves to opposite sides of the 8 foot tank (oscar was a couple inches larger). It seemed like the jag was trying to figure what was going on with the oscar.
Damn man you tried your best. Thats exactly what i thought. Could i just be assuming theres an emotional response because of the overall situation.
Idk why but it just feels wrong to post the vids, at least right now. We all deal with losing fish but for me me most of the time its an "oh man that sucks" reaction, losses are expected in this hobby. With this guy its different. He definitely was a real wet pet. Especially when a fish can cause more headaches than the family dog.
