Alright, so now we know that the bichir won't grow to its monstrous size. so, any other tankmates other than African/South American cichlids?
Why not find what your brother is interested in and tell us the choices and we can guide you to the best option. Also agree with twenty you’d be lucky to get a CB to 10” I experienced a stop in growth at 8”

:iagree:

The list of possible tank mates would be pretty large.

Other bichirs make great tank mated too. A group of cb sens and dels would most likely be an entertaining tank. Throw in some ropes and call it a day

Flint town!
ok makes sense. my brother also had mollies in the aquarium with the bichirs (he had two at that point). and one day, we noticed that the bichirs killed one of the mollies and were eating it. it was waaaay too big to fit in either of their mouths, but they just ate at it. like sharks eating a dead floating whale. so thats what im still worried about. even though the tankmates might not fit into his mouth, he can still eat one small piece at a time if the fish isnt aggressive enough to fight for itself.

Completely possible. They can and will "death roll" to tear off chunks. Most will do this with dead or dying fish but some will attack live fish bigger then themselves. I have 9 polys of various types and 11 rope fish in my 180. I also have a ctenopoma, two geophagus and a sae also 1 straggler black skirt tetra. My polys dont bother the established fish. I tried adding a school of 14 Congo tetras and lost two with a quickness the rest I caught out really easily, they pretty much swam in the net for protection. Fish emmit a fear pheromone which drives predators. I didnt believe it fully until that night.
I know a guy who fed bull frogs to his sens he had 10 sens wild caught and CB mixed they'd tear the live frogs up.
So kinda a crap shoot as to what exactly is going to happen but the general rule is if it doesnt fit in the mouth you will probably be ok.
