Coloring of “Red Spotted Gold” Severum

I Recently bought this Red Spotted Gold Severum and right now it is not showing much red coloring at all and I was just curious if anyone knew from experience if these guys get more colorful as they get bigger or am i stuck with its current color? It’s currently about 2”

I’m assuming because it doesn’t have red eyes like the really nice looking red spotted severums do i will look more like a gold severum than a red spotted severum. Any thoughts ?

It's not going to turn red. As it grows it might develop more red spots but the base color will always be gold/yellow like this.

I k kw he won’t turn base color red I meant the spots becoming more prominent. Is it possible it’s spots become more prominent and more spots to show up as he grows like this one?

It won’t likely have that concentration of spots. The super reds that end up like that usually have a high concentration of spotting even at a small size. But it will still likely develop more spotting and striation over time, especially if it’s male.

Sounds good thanks for the info, I was looking to add one more severum to my tank, but Im not sure on what species would do well with and be peaceful with my red spot. Do all severums get along? Is there a Severum you reccomend ?

Sometime last summer I bought a 1.5” “red spotted gold” that looked very similar to yours. This is him today at 4”. You can see that it’s continued developing red spots and facial striation but it’s still not going to look like that example you posted.

The facial striations on yours are amazing? So did it not have any of those striations when you first got it they all came through as he grew? That gives me hope cuz mine has nothing on his face at the moment. But Yours is gorgeous i’d be more than happy if mine turns out like yours. Do you have have any pics of it when it was little?

Most Heros species do not have markings when they are small. They come in as the fish ages. Males have facial striations and usually more markings through the body; females have solid faces and tend to have less markings in general.

There are a few exceptions, one being the red spotted golds and super reds. These fish are line-bred (and in some instances artificially enhanced with synthetic color enhancers in foods) to be more colorful at a young age. It’s why you sometimes see 2” super reds that are very colorful.

Your fish should continue to color up as it grows. If it’s male it should develop nice red striation in the face like mine. Super red females do sometimes have markings so maybe you’ll get lucky and they’ll develop regardless of its sex.

Well mine surely isn’t a super red so hoping mine is male. Ill post an update here in a few months showing how it colored up
