Cichlasoma Dimerus?

Hi there, I'm very new to the forum (first post!), and I was hoping to get some advice on something.

I recently bought a cichlasoma dimerus to add to my 90 gallon cichlid community (severum, electric blue acara, etc..). I bought it from a reputable home based seller that has a large pair of beautiful Dimerus, so I shouldn't have any concerns, but.....

As he grows, he looks exactly like a convict cichlid. From all of the photos I've seen of juvenile dimerus, I can't find any examples of one that has this strong of a striped pattern.

Should I be concerned that I have a little convict cichlid instead of a dimerus? If you have experience keeping dimerus, did they ever look like a convict cichlid while growing?

He's currently about 2.5" long.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply.

This is my thought as well, which is really bizarre to me. This person clearly had dimerus (that were really nice and large and had a new batch of fry in with them at the time). She indicated that what I bought had come from those same parents. She had a tank full of them (with no adult convicts at all).

Just seems strange to me... not that I have anything against the convict cichlid, but it wasn't really what I wanted to do with my tank.

Agree that's no dimerus, it's a con.
This is a Cichlasoma dimerus "Bella Union" Uruguay

This is what I suspected. Honestly, I thought they were convicts when I bought him, but I trusted the seller who insisted that this is just what the dimerus looked like when young.

Oh well, he was only $5, so not really a big loss or anything. I'll probably give him a bit more time, and if he's still 100% a convict as he grows (if that makes sense) - then I'll look to re-home him and get something else that works well with my tank.

It's just disappointing because the large dimerus pair that she had were so beautiful.

Yeah well it’s 100% a convict 100% not a dimerus.
