So I got this fish at the fish store and it was sold to me as a polls bichir, it obviously isn’t which is super sad but it also looks much different than all the Senegal’s
I own. It has a bit of mottling throughout his color and his belly is much more yellow that my almost light tan Senegal’s.

Is it just a different locality of a Senegal?

Looks like a standard sen. Was it sold to you as wild caught?
Nope sold to me as a polypterus polli, guess I got scammed. It was really small when I got it and has had exceptional growth so hopefully it get larger than my Senegal’s who don’t seem to get over 5-6 inch

Rip me I already have 4 captive bred Senegal’s, any idea why the coloring would be so different ?
You can get 10 bichirs of the same species from the same batch, there will always be some form of slight variation whether it be pattern or color or shape.

My male CB Senegalus looks exactly like yours in the pic and my female is gray looking. I've had several over the yrs and absolutely agree with Hao Hao who is a very experienced with Polypterus.
