I wanted to start a very specific catch location thread on these trimac because you dont see much information on them. See lots about the Rio Naranga , some on the Rio Sarabia, and very little on the Rio Niltepec and almost nothing on the Rio Los Perros.

These fish were ordered from Max's cichlids out of Florida. I request 6 males in the 3'-4" range. My goal is a solo male when its all said and done. While I know tank sizes for fish can and will be debated, in the end this is my fish and I feel comfortable raising a solo male in a 90 gallon. I am an avid water changer and the tank is filtered with two Aquaclear 110's. If I like more than one of these fish I do have a second 90 gallon available to keep a second fish.

Seems as if the only real seller of these Rio Niltepec trimac is Max's Cichlids. I was super impressed in my dealings with Max and his communication during the whole process from start to finish was outstanding.

I know, enough with the talking, WE WANT PICS!

My inspiration was seeing this fish on Max's website and he uses it on emails.

Well after a few months of getting fish rehomed and prepped for this project I put in my order. Waking up at 5am I headed off to Southwest Cargo to pick up early on a Sunday morning.

Checked box as soon as I got it

Pulled out all six bags and checked fish

All were healthy and no D.O.A. Each fish was double bagged and individually bagged. This one caught my eye right away. nice 'Flowers' and teardrop under the eye.

Got them home and acclimated for temp first, then did a slow drip method to acclimate to water.

Of the fish, 3 were on the larger side and 3 were on the smaller. A nice mix of size.

The one I liked made itself obvious with a nice clear pattern showing right away

Yesterday the fish ate well on "treat" foods like Mysis shrimp, Brine shrimp and bloodworms. Was more concerned with just getting them eating and plumped up a bit as opposed to getting them on to a high quality pellet.

This is the fishroom with the two 90's on top right and left racks

An updated pic with extra tank in mix and night lighting going

Will update the progress on these as I go

That Rio Niltepec looks bad@$$ DMD123 DMD123 . I love the colors and spots on him. Looks like you are going to have some nice Trimacs to grow out. I don't believe I've seen this location before. Seems like you have some rare Trimacs. Please keep us posted as I, and I presume other members would like to see the growing process to adulthood.

Doing Google searches pretty much leads you to either Max's Cichlids or the FaceBook page of Max's, lol. Have not really found pics of nice full grown Rio Niltepec trimacs, just some sub adults. So the goal here is to post pics to make information on these guys more readily available. From what Ive seen so far a very generalized description seems to be that these look like something in-between a Rio Naranga with its bulky, bulldog look, and the Rio Sarabia with its lean predatory body. The Rio Niltepec seem to have a bit more elongated body but not quite that of the Rio Sarabia, again a very generalized description and time may show this not to be the case.

Some may look at my older fishroom pic and notice that the left upper 90 seems to have a trimac in it... this one was acquired at around 6" off a hobbyist who was getting out of fishkeeping. I never did get a catch location on that one since I got the fish through a mutual friend. It was a fish with a slew of problems so I rehomed it and decided to start with young ones that were from a good source.

But a few shots of the old trimac for fun

Hey DMD123 DMD123 ,
I was just on the TUIC website and they have F1 Rio Niltepec for sale. They go for $18.50 a pop. A bit exspensive for a 2" fish.

Max's Cichlids pricing

Amphilophus trimaculatus Rio Niltepec Mexico
F1 2” to 2 .5” $10
F1 3” to 4” $20
F1 Females 3” to 4” $30
F1 4 1/2” to 5 1/2” $40
F1 6” $60 air cargo only

I got the 3"-4" males for $20 each and shipping to me was like $68. No hidden charges for box, heating pad, etc. Fish price is fish price and you pay the airline themselves for the shipping when you pick up.

I was super tempted to start with the 2" fish at $10 a pop and get like 10-12 but Ive been tired of growing out little fish and wanted a little bit of a head start, lol
