In nature, these cichlids are only found in rapids.
I have not kept this species, but have friends that have, but... have kept many other rheophilic species (Tomocicha, Rheophillus etc).
If i were to keep them, I would not rely of an air pump, canister or HOB for circulation.
I would be using some type powerhead with venturi, or one of the propeller type water movement types available these days.
Even for average riverine species, I take current , water movement and oxygenation seriously, but for rheophillic species even more.
I use the stream prop pump below on a 180 gal in tank for added circulation, beside the 1500GPH pump cycling water filtration thru the sump.
