Pink tail chalceus->red finned cigar shark. Very similar shape and scales, plus brighter colors, but only gets to 25 instead of 100 cm.

Interestingly, this is the 3rd case of a tetra/characid substituting a barb/cyprinid. The previous 2 were bloodfin tetras/silver dollars for tinfoil barbs.
I absolutely love the Pink Tailed Chalceus and this fish looks so much like them! I’ll have to track some down for my 4ft

When you said pink tail chalceus, did you mean cigar shark? Because it doesn't make much sense otherwise.

Much as I'd hate to disappoint you (and ironically go against the purpose of this thread a bit), I don't know if 1.22m would be large enough. When I asked, 1.83m was suggested to be the bare minimum: https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/tell-me-about-the-pink-tail-chalceus.744707/

Of course, if you give it a try and find 1.22m is enough, that'd be great!

Sorry, i meant i’ll have to find some cigar sharks since they look like one of my fav fish, but stay at a manageable size.
I have a 6ft, however my father is determined to keep it as rainbowfish only.

Good luck! My local aquarium store has cigar sharks but no chalceus.

As for a previous suggestion of mine to replace gars with gar characins, golden gars can be substituted with golden gar characins. Same golden color, shape, and rarity.

Another possible substitute for cigar shark: Red tail hemiodus. Bright red on the tail, similar streamlined profile, and even smaller than the chalceus substitute (15 cm).

Discus and angelfish are cichlids !- I've found them to be extremely nasty amongst themselves as well. 2 groups of cichlids that are not welcome in my tanks any longer. And cichlids are my primary interest, specifically those from the Amazon, Andes and Central/North America
