The End of my Pterodoras Granulosus Journey

Purpose of the thread :
To Share and Trade information and experience on the species , mainly the cause of death


Got back home after some drinks last night to this displeasing view. Kept her from 17.5" back in 2016 when it was still 2.5 years old.



Did some research and according to this site, this is the lifespan of the fish.

Curious on the cause of death, so i have come to three possible causes:
1. Stressed females may retain several egg batches in their ovarian lumen and attain excessive belly size. This may in some cases cause death
This is quite popular in My country (Indonesia) as a cause of Red Arowana's Death.
2. Die of old age?
3. Obesity?

Main diet is high protein pellet, occasionally fed frozen shrimps and in a very rare occasion is fed frozen feeders.

Would be cool to here some opinions from fellow MFKers

Sources on the internet claim that P.Granulosus maxed out at 65cm ish. Mine died at 67.5cm .

This is very disheartening for me as it is one of my favorite throughout my collection. It was a great 6 years with you.
Growing out 4 more Juve P.Granus reaching 12" now, not giving up.

I’m sorry for your loss. Amazing size on him looks like you gave him a god life

Sorry for your loss, it was a beauty.
I think old age can be ruled out, I would imagine a sedentary and somewhat slow growing fish of that size would have a lifespan of several decades.

Thank you for your thread. Very valuable. I wish everyone followed your and my example of reporting fish deaths, sizes, ages, possible causes, etc.

I believe P. granulosus should easily live several decades, ideally even 50 and more years.

We got 3 grannies in Aug 2015 at 3" from John Kreatsoulas of fresh water tropicals in Ft. Myers, FL, USA. Two are still with us 6 years later, at under 2 feet, supposed males because of the 10x slower growth and maybe smaller adult size. They live now in an 1800 gal.

In 4500 gal, our biggest one, supposed female reached 28" / 70 cm from 3" / 7.5 cm in less than 3.5 years, in Dec 2018. It sadly and unexpectedly fell victim to a pathogen we had going around our tanks in 2018, perhaps some columnaris strain from poorly QT'ed fish. The symptoms of great swelling have been observed with many other fish. The fish fought for a few weeks, we even gave it erythromycin intramusclular via syringe, but in the end the granny was finished off in the hospital tank by septicemia, I assume from the spread of redness.

It was chunky sure, but a good portion of what you see below is swelling.
