Unused 473 liter tanks are close to a thousand dollars from what I've been able to find. My cousin is also very opposed to replacing the tanks due to the large hassle - this was something I asked about.

They're also opposed to us doing it, due to effort and time. 900 is their best deal.

Thanks for the smell tip.

Correct. It's quite fortunate they allowed the number of tanks they did.

My opinions on those types of fish are based on the appearances of the fish and the dangers they pose to my favorites, not space available. If I had much larger tanks than I do now, I'd get more of the species I already have.

Well, maybe some XL catfish too (think red tail, tiger shovelnose, etc). They resemble very large versions of my favorite pictus catfish, and although I prefer pictus to them, I wouldn't turn up my noses at them if I had space.
If you’re so taken with pictus you should read about bolt catfish and vulture catfish (personal favorite) they are active and beautiful. I think there is an article called sharks in a freshwater aquarium. One of the few fish I’d consider keeping a species tank of in a large tank

Read about them (and that article). They are encompassed under that category of XL catfish.
I'd have them if I had the space, they're definitely nearly as interesting as pictus.

P phreeflow , thanks but like I said my cousin does not want to go through the hassle of replacing tanks. Plus we don't want to get a tank close to the end of its silicone lifespan.
Perhaps I should have mentioned that sooner.

It is a lot but it was the best we were able to find given our circumstances. I don't like the cost either (remember it's for 2 tanks and not just 1) but nothing better was found.

Just finished moving the fish. Ridiculously difficult to catch them (took around 5 hours), and on top of all that one of my pictus catfish may have a permanently disfigured pectoral fin from the ordeal (this doesn't concern me unless it presents an issue for the catfish though).

Whew! There truly are no words to describe what an undertaking that was.

New tanks are probably about the same slightly more maybe, at least where I'm from. I recently purchased 2 125g tanks for $1100 brand new, tank, stand, glass tops and lights. I told the store manager to keep the stands I didnt want the cheap particle board stand. But his cousin is opposed to getting new and apparently the pricing in the area where they live isn't good for tanks. If they are happy with the decision then so be it.
I'd definitely wait more then 2 days for the silicone to cure.

I understand the circumstance, but 2 days for silicon to cure on a large indoor tank is not something I would be feeling great about. Would have been better off getting a new tank and replacing or buying a used one and resealing yourself with the fish in a big rubbermaid tub for a week. just my two cents, it's done now so as long as your happy with it.
