All depends on where your hobby is. I personally like having my fish greet me at the door, and want to be touched. And it's something I'll have for the next 20 years.

Small community fish never did anything for me. I like having "wet pets"
You may have missed this, but said small community fish were only used as a parameter of how overrated arowanas are in my view.

It's a funny coincidence you should mention 'wet pets' being around for the next 20 years. Because in having clown loaches, that's exactly what I've got - just not in the form of an arowana.

Only vaguely related to this topic but I remember being short of live food when my baby silver arowanas were coming off yolk sacs. I went to my local fish store and the most suitable - cheapest fish were neon tetras. So I bought a hundred neons each time for a few weeks.

Tank looked good with colour! Aro grew quickly.

My unpopular opinion: Planted arowana tanks looks great. I generally like plants in aquarium because of its benefits for the aquarium and it just looks more natural, recently got into keeping arowana and put plants in its aquarium. Got a few visitors commenting how an arowana should be kept in an empty bare bottom tank or how its just a waste to put it there cause the fish dosen't need it. Well first i just like the way it looks and secondly I find that the even if the the fish dosen't need it plants generally benefits the aquarium as a whole.

I personally have yet to see very many fish that don't look good in a planted (be it live plants or realistic fake plants) setup tbh.

+1 except in the case of fish that don’t come from planted areas, but rather rocky or wooded areas.
Either way, fish always look and act best in natural setups.

Yes. Some of the only fish that don't look good in those setups would be rocky Rift Lake species.

To be completely honest its also more for me than the fish. Personally a sterile empty tank makes me anxious, fells like anything could go wrong at any moment when I'm not there, natural planted tank on the other hand fells like an ecosystem that can take care of itself. I still keep up with the regular maintenance though, just feels like an extra layer of precaution.

I completely agree…until my plants start doing poorly or I need to catch a fish…then my qt tank’s setup is looking real sweet lol
