How about warmouth. Could I keep them with other fish in a 40 gallon
Warmiuth get larger then green sunfish. Most lepomis species sadly won't work for a 40g as most will reach upwards of 8-14in fully grown. There is only one true lepomis (that ik of) that would stay small enough and that is the orange spotted sunfish. The female generally stay around 3.5-4in while males will cap out around 5in. Just like all the other species of lepomis, they are highly aggressive/territorial and don't make for good community fish. Honestly if your looking for a native community tank I would suggest a combination of some different Dace and Shinner species as they tend to be very slow growing, small, and like schooling together. These here are a couple examples of how gorgeous these native fish can be. The first pic is a mountain red belly dace while the second is a rainbow shinner.

I live in Florida but I would be able to get some fish from more up north on some online fish stores like jonahsaquariums.
Longears
Go catch them there's a bunch in the Tampa bypass canal
The record is like 10" but they usually stop growing at around 5"
Or if you want just get a single warmouth with some gambusia
If you don't care about being able to feed it bugs or whatever you can go with enneacanthus

Mud sunfish are pretty cool as well. They have a similar look to a Warmouth and stay small. I know I mentioned it earlier but I would really look into the legality. Mud sunnies are a threatened species up by me. Not sure of their status down south. I couldn’t find anything saying it’s illegal or legal to keep them. Maybe some other members might know.
