As this story unfolds

I can't help but ask a glaringly obvious question.
When you move out of an house, whether it's your own house, or rented accommodation, you simply hand the keys over to the new owner/tennant, you certainly don't hang onto them so you can let yourself back into your old property as and when it suits!
When we moved into our new house back in 2014 we were given the keys off the previous owners and they went their jolly way, never seen them since. It never entered our heads to change the locks and what not. Maybe the real estate industry works differently in the US.
Who was responsible for getting the keys off this guy? It certainly shouldn't be you! And given the fact he has learning disabilities I'd have thought it was extra important to get those keys, just in case he "forgot" where he lived and came back to his old house, like he did!
What part did the estate agents play in all this that left you so open?
