Hi everyone, i currently own a 7-8 inch crossback arowana for slightly over a week and it is not eating very well. It would occasionally eat 1 small dried shrimp, when fed more it will eat it then spit it out. I know everyone would say that its been a week so wait it out til it eats as this is normal behavior, but i really do not want to lose this fish. My 2 albino silver aros adjusted and started eating in 3 days, so the fact that it has been more than a wk that this crossback aro is not eating well is kinda scaring me a little.
For context my aros live with 2 albino aros, 4 koi fishes and 2 plecos. Don’t worry there is no space constraint, i can probably put 5 more aros and the space is still enough. But i do feel that my ablino sliver aros limit the chances of the crossback aro eating as they both feed aggressively since koi fish are gluttens and would try to snatch their food. Also i feel that because the kois are bigger than the crossback and swim around really fast, it stresses the crossback sometimes and it may limit the chances of the crossback being in the mood to eat.
what are your thoughts guys? Really hope that responses come in quick.

First of all welcome to MFK!
Try increasing the temperature to 30 degree celsius, making sure that there is enough aeration. This increases the fish's metabolism , thus it should start eating soon. This method worked with another person's aro who wasn't eating, as well as mine. Heres that thread.

Just had the exact same problem as you with my very similar sized crossback golden, AR1's advice worked perfectly for me, raised the temp to 30 and added a bigger power head to increase flow, took a couple of days but my guy is eating like a pig now, crickets and worms is what's working for me, but crickets is what he took first.

Hi AR1, really appreciate the warm welcome to MFK and the very quick response. I actually did set the water temperature to 30 degrees celsius 4 days prior to making this post, hoping that the crossback aro would be more in the mood to eat. Just a quick on the crossback Aro, I have just fed it and this is the most it has eaten for the past 1.5 weeks. Usually it will take about 3 days to convince it to take a piece of shrimp, but miraculously it took 3 pieces of shrimp upfront this morning and spat out the 4th shrimp😅. Although this may not be the normal amount that an arowana at 7-8 inches should be eating, but I will take it as a small win for now baby steps always.
Some obvervations that I have made is that the Crossback Aro only likes to eat at a certain spot, and that it seems to feel pressured to eat when the koi fishes swim by (understandable as the kois are bigger and more keen on eating). Also I realised that my female albino silver aro seem to "calm" the crossback aro when it is swimming around it (not really sure how valid of an observation this is). Are these common Arowana behaviours?
I will make some updates on future feedings, my crossback aro is not as social as my 2 albino silver aros so feeding it will not be as easy as feeding the 2 albino silver aros.

Is he in a tank by himself, or with all the other fish you mentioned?

Is he stressed?

Try live food. He may only eat live. Ghost shrimp, crickets, cockroaches, treated river fish fry.

he is living with 2 albino silver Aros, 4 kois and 2 places at the moment. today he is doing well, eating better than usual but definitely not enough enough for an arowana at 7-8 inches and it is definitely less stressed. baby steps as always hope that it will be eating better than today in the next few days

just an update on the crossback, he is doing very well. His appetite is up and he is more excited for feeding. Thank you again AR1 for your advice, works like a charm. His colors are much more pronounced than before. I have attached a picture of him next to the albino silver. Really looking forward to seeing them grow beautifully. IMG_7807.jpegIMG_7807.jpeg
