Listen to this as an example of the English language spoken in Scotland AR1 AR1 .

Lol. There's a large Jamaican expat community here who speak Patois which, if I'm not mistaken, is considered an english dialect. After many years here I still don't understand it unless they repeat it again slowly. I've worked with quite a few people from Jamaica over the years and their written english is completely understandable.

The term "patois" is used to refer to many local variations of English that contain words and pronunciations pulled from other languages; it's usually intended in a denigrating and/or condescending fashion. I've even heard the French referring to the version of their language spoken in Quebec as a patois...that comment was not well-received in Montreal! Similarly, my German instructor way back in high school insisted that we were learning "High German" rather than what he called the "patois" which some of the students of German ancestry had grown up speaking in their homes.

I'm especially amazed whenever I hear of the numerous distinct accents to be found in England itself. I'm not taking a shot at you here, Esox...this time ;)...but look at the comparative sizes of England and the U.S. or Canada. It's not hard to understand why a Newfoundlander, an Albertan, a Bostonian and a Louisiana Cajun would all sound considerably different; they all live considerable distances apart. But then to see and hear that there are multiple distinguishable accents in a relatively tiny area such as England is amazing.

You're right, AR1 AR1 , you and I and Esox and Ogertron3000 Ogertron3000 and Milingu Milingu and everyone else on here have no trouble understanding each other...when communicating through written words on a screen. If you threw us into a room together and we tried to chat...well, I'm sure we could get our respective points across, but it would likely include some furrowed brows and a lot of "Pardon?" and "Sorry...say again?" comments.

I’ve dealt with way worse than a bunch of quirky British folks and strange Canadians. How hard could it be to talk to you two?

I'm not following...? Esox? Some assistance here? AR1 AR1 is hitting the keys with his fingers held at a weird angle...the resulting accent is making him difficult to understand...🤨

Alright, alright, I’ll slow it down for you. Maybe throw in some hand gestures and interpretive dance next time?
