I currently have 1 largemouth and 1 small mouth bass, currently we were provided with a yarn filter but that is obviously not good. are there any good filters?

also, how do you lower the nitrate level?

PS, school project, we are required to have bass in it :p

A sump with mechanical and bio filtration. Plants use nitrates to grow so you could add plants, 15-20% water change would help. Has the tank been cycled?
we might have to get a sump. we did cycle the tank for a while- we might have to just change the water though

How long has it been running? A 20% water change likely won't do much. You probably need to do 50 to 75% water change on a regular schedule. How big are the bass? Nitrates are primarily removed through water changes and plants can help but you'd need a lot.
