Viewing panel glass thickness help!

So I'm making an outdoor pond and I'd like to install viewing panel. The dimensions are 8 ft by 12 ft and 22.5 tall. I'm also digging a foot away from the edges probably down 30 in.
I would like to use a old 75 gallon tank as a viewing panel.
I know the glass thickness is only a 1/4" and is only 18" tall.
If I brought the glass all the way to the top of my pond would 1/4 be thick enough mind you the viewing window would be 44" long and 15" tall

Out of curiosity, how is the glass kept in place? Just silicone and the water pressure keeps it in place?

If it was my pond, id want some redundancy. Probably 5/8"-3/4"min

Keep in mind the cost of the glass is insignificant, compared to it failing and loosing your fish.

I forget the name of the sealant I was going to use mind you this is a project for next spring just getting ideas but its not silicone But the same concept. And then you would connect the pond liner to the glass. Can you make a very good point I rather be safe than sorry but I also have a 75 laying around figured I could use it for this maybe.

Think about this for a second. You are going to spend a decent amount of money and time building this pond, and willing to gamble the success of the project on a 1/4in piece of glass. That piece of glass in its original application is braced, to keep it from bowing.

I would rather have a 75g on hand for a sick fish or quarantine. Good luck on with your project. Post pics when you get to building it.

If you are looking to do this on a budget, check FB marketplace for glass. You can find large thick glass panels for cheap.
