I was in Peru with some fishermen and they were catching lots of interesting fish. I don’t really know my piranhas but the book I was using said S. rhombeus but someone recently told me it was S. compressus. Thoughts? Any help would be great. Thanks

S. compressus

Would be easier to identify if pic was taken soon as piranha was caught. I'm not definitely sure but I'm going with serrasalmus compressus.

If I remember correctly rhombeus always show some red in the eyes. Even in juvenile specimens. I would address that fish as cf compressus.

Thanks everyone for the help. I have one more Serrasalmus from that day if I can trouble you for another. I’m looking at S. maculatus for this guy.

Serrasalmus manuelli, the colours are probably washed out

Does S. manuelli occur in the Peruvian Amazon. Fishbase doesn’t have it listed there.

I just looked in some books. Still not 100% sure but given the location I think it's sanchezi.

No, and manueli are not even found in Peru.
