Not sure. Snails are a mystery. If I get healthy stock to start with, I have no issues. If I buy from a tank that has some crawling around and other half hidden in their shells, I get those unusual deaths as well.

That being said, I loved nerites until they started laying eggs everywhere. Their eggs are very hard, never hatch, and seem to never dissolve. Looks disgusting. Sulawesi snails are great if you can find those

As stated, strong lighting is the main culprit to your algae issue. Below is a simple low tech 14 gal cube I’ve had running for 7 months now and I’ve never had an issue with algae. Light is a clip on 7w, 320LM with blue & white LEDs and filtration is a hob aqua clear 30 with minimal water flow.

May I suggest floating plants? Shown below I have dwarf water lettuce in another tank. With the right conditions, they’re fast growers and are great at absorbing excess nutrients in the water column. They can also serve as a barrier or umbrella from strong lighting. I use suction cups and fishing line to contain them from floating around and clogging up the protein skimmer. They grow so fast in this tank, I have to discard some weekly.

As heavily planted as the tank below is, I have the most issue with algae in this high tech tank with strong lighting and CO2 injection. I get occasional algae on the glass and black beard algae within the moss…even with lots of rams horn snails, cherry shrimps and a few hillstream loaches. I know it’s due to the high lighting. I deal with it. Sorry…I had to crop the photo below so it would upload. Cheers😁
