fish never actually stop growing but their growth rate just slows as they age.

Yep.

I don't think 14" in one year is the 'norm' for an oscar. 10"...12" maybe but 14" in one year? highly unlikely. Personally I'd say this oscar's growth is just about right. I have no doubt he will get bigger but you will probably see him putting on more girth than length for a while, though I have no doubt he will gain a few more inches lengthwise as well. :)

I've heard of multiple oscar owners getting their O's to 14" in one year, it is definitely possible, but I agree, 12" is more common (but I would consider 10" to be pretty slow growth, unless you started out with fry).

And 12" in one year isn't a "maybe", it's more like a "definitely". Oscars are usually fairly fast growers, 1" per month is rather unimpressive for an Oscar, but even with that growth rate, it would get to over 12" in a year.

what do you feed your oscars, extra strength fertilizer?!?! from what i've experienced with the oscar that i had and from most stories and readings that i have done with oscars it seems that they most ofter slow down in growth around 10-11 inches and go from growing 1 in. per month to about 1 in. every 3-4 months and seems to kinda slow down more in more with every inch they grow, not sure if that 100% true for all oscars but at least in my experience it is. so i would have to say that the size of the oscar is fairly normal for its age

I am not currently keeping Oscars, but when I did (years ago) I fed them hikari cichlid gold, cichlid staple, and krill. I had two of them, and one had extremely slow growth and never got much past 9" (I now suspect that it wasn't getting enough food) while the other grew very quickly until about 12". I didn't have them for a full year though, so the larger one would have probably gotten past 12" in its first year, if I would have kept it (and this was in just a 55 gallon tank, too).

Oscars do the fastest growing withing the first year of age. Then there growth rate will greatly reduce to about an inch a year...........
