Hey guys, I'm hoping to start this build sometime in the new year. I was quoted $7000 for a 50mm thick sheet of acrylic and was told that this would be what I'd need for the front panel of my plywood tank build. As anyone would agree, that is a hell of a lot of money and I was just wandering what people's thoughts were on thickness, and whether glass or acrylic?
Thanks in advance
White tip :)

$7000?!?! :nilly:

Have you research into glass?

I've had a look at glass but all the different names are so confusing. I've got a carpentry/landscaping background so the building and design is no problem, but I've got next to no experience with glass which makes it hard. I'm sure acrylic is pricey around the world, but here in Australia I get the feeling we pay way more then we should for things :-/

mate im in brisbane... dont waste ur money on acrylic, use glass. Ill post here again in sec once i have reply from my glass supplier on price

19mm glass sheet 10x4 $3200, been told more then sufficient. Less then half the price of acrylic

Guy on here by the name of Greenterra did a 9x4x3.5 build out of plywood, if I remember correctly he used a sheet of 19mm float glass 2400x850, he bought his glass for $1200 from Aquariums 'r' us.
There has been many plywood builds deeper than 4 feet.
Its all in the sealing.

that sheet for $1200 is not even quite 8x3.... a big weight and material difference to step up to a 10x4 sheet, but i guess like you said its all in the sealing and build design, plywood tank may be 10x4 but is the actual size of the viewing window this dimensions or is it smaller?
