Yeah I've always loved the thought of a massive tank with a crap load of small fish in there. I love my big fish, but for me I'd wait till I buy a property and excavate a big ass pond into it lol. Plus I live in the tropics so it allows for that kind of thing :) For the tank I was thinking along the lines of BGK's, Angels, Guppies, mid sized L numbers, Kulhi loaches, Clown loaches, RTBS, Neon tetras, Barbs, and other small to mid sized fish.
I want it to be like a giant planted reef with all different colours and species zipping about :)

Sounds like a fantastic idea! If it were me, I'd drop the height down to about 90cm (still a massive amount of space for the fish you're keeping) and make the viewing window as close to full height as possible so you can see those bottom dwellers clearly.

The extra foot of height would look impressive, but IMO if it a choice between a 3' tall tank with a full window or a 4' tall tank with a 3' window I know which I'd pick, especially for a monster "community tank"!

Ok guys, now we've got the glass thickness sorted, I've decided to go the stacked timber route with the tank framing for added strength and durability. Like I said I have experience in building and landscaping but I am unsure on the timber to use in this instance. I'm talking about treated verses untreated? I can get 100mm x100mm F7 rough sawn Oregon posts for $15.50 a lineal metre which works out around $800/$900 for what I need based off a quick head count. Now I'm sure these posts are chemically treated as is most of the timber in Oz and the most available timber is pine. Now being that the idea of a tank is to hold water, would it matter if I used treated timber for the stacked frame since it is going to be sealed inside with plywood, fibreglass and epoxy? Also, what plywood do I use? Marine or?
