I have a 110 gallon tank and was wondering about weight issues, considering I live in an apartment. Everything seems pretty sturdy and it is an 8 floor building, but then again, I have no idea how much it will weigh once it is full. Can someone provide some advice on this issue? Thanks. I am very new to this.

Check your lease. They might restrict you to a certain size.

There's nothing in the lease about a limitation to aquarium size. However, I am worried about weight being an issue on the floor regardless. How heavy is 110 gallons of water plus a 110 gallon (glass) aquarium? Is it going to be more than 500 pounds? 600? I just need to know where I can find ways to calculate this, in addition to any other information that one might provide. Thanks for responding.

Well your looking at around 1,000 pounds maybe a little more when filled. water weighs about 9 pounds a gallon.I had a 125 in my apt before moving i just placed it on an outer wall and went in the basement to check out which way the beams were lying.a wood stand is better at dispensing the weight than an iron stand.an iron stand puts all its weight in the four corners unlike the bottom of a wood stand.

First thing, check your entrance way. Is it concrete? Now days, a lot of the apts have concrete floors. They are built in pre-fab sections. I have a 120 tank in the livingroom and a few more in an extra bedroom, no problem. I believe water weighs 7.2 lbs per gallon. I have 30 lbs of slate plus who knows how much gravel.

If your floor is not concrete. You better stick to 55's.

That's just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the helpful advice. I have a wood stand, so that's great.
Ziggy, are you referring to concrete floors or a concrete foundation for the building itself? Just to be clear.

But have u tried to ask them if it's ok to have an aquarium in your apartment besides the case that your in the 8th floor?

One way to tell is to ask if a water bed is allowed. in general if your floor can safely support the weight of a waterbed then an aquarium up to the 210 gallon range is ok as long as it's supported well...One way to do that is to place a sheet of 3/4" 13ply voidless birch. (sealed of course) under the stand to help distribute the weight.

Not positive on this but I don't beleive you can build an 8 story building from wood. Most likely a steal beam or pour in place concrete framing.

That 110 won't even make the floor flinch.

thanks for asking this question. I will be moving into a 2nd floor apartment and am also curious if a 125 on a wooden frame would be safe. I asked about the waterbeds and the girl wasn't sure if they were allowed, didn't think so. I didnt say anything about a fish tank. There is nothing about either of the two in the lease. Floor creeked a bit in the model they shoud me. What do you guys think? thanks!
