You can look into smaller cichlids like Jack Dempsey or green terror for that size tank.
I don’t know too much about plecos tbh. You probably could have a sunshine in a 120, but they produce so much waste it will limit your options for stocking.

I have heard that Jack Dempse’s needed a 6 foot tank? Maybe I got them and Oscar’s tank sizes mixed up. Do you think a pair of Jack Dempsey’s and a Sunshine would be good together?

If those are the only fish it should work.
Jd only tops at about 10 inches. Oscars can hit 15+.

I think I’ll like the 2 JDs and 1 Sunshine idea. Most Oscars don’t that big do they, like 12 inches just like Pleco a. My LFS is a Petco and they have a 120 where they take donations and it broke my heart when I saw a 14 inch Tiger Oscar, 7 years old that was from a 40 gallon. Even worse, I saw a 15 inch Sailfin that looked like a stresse Common, it was so grey and 11 years old. Some guy donated it out of his 30 gallon.

Oscars get about 11" in the first year and then slow down growth to 12-14". As far as the sunshine, they also get to about 12", though I'm not sure how fast they grow. I still think a 4 foot tank is a bit small for a 12" fish but it could work. Whether it will be good with the JDs will be determined by their personality. Could go either way.

I agree 4’ is a little small, but it is 4 times the length of the fish and at least it’s double the width which is very nice.

I have wanted an African Knife but I wouldn’t comfortable keeping even a brown in anything less than 5 foot long.
i used to have a brown knifefish a long time ago and it only grew to 5 inch. how big are yours? i have heard that they can become quite big but i have never seen one bigger then 5 inch tbh.

im worried about 2 cichlids and a pleco in such a small tank. Might be fine until they start breeding. Then that tank would be the minimum size and ur pleco might get killed. Maybe get 2 females?

I had an Uncle who had a 13” Brown Knifefish, and it was very active. I know your concerned about the fish so I won’t get any Oscars, and I know a 120 is not Giant but its not small either. I might just get a 95 gallon (60x18x20) and a rhino Pleco and make it a community tank. That’s one setup I can’t mess up as all my tanks except 2 are communities.

There are still loads of options for a 4x2 as it’s a great sized tank. It all comes down to what you would like to keep.
To me this tank is a good size for a young fahaka puffer and would give a goofs number of years before it may need an upgrade and things change it that time period.
A number of catfish would suit the tank as well as a number of cichlid, geophagus, larger tetras, barbs, polypterus, etc.
if you already have a number of communities I would look to bite the bill it and go species or large pair like your thinking.

Ok, so would a Green Terror, and a Sunshine Pleco and maybe 1 other Cichlid work. Also, how about a female and male flower horn like the King Of Diy has. That tanks a 4x2 100. Or would it be a good Discus tank size with the Sunshine? What do you think Dave?
